I have heard that the RN used Double Haven as an anchorage right up to WW2. If anyone can verify this, and - even better - if they have a photo, please get in touch.
I have also heard that this was the reason for the amazing level of detail of soundings on the Admiralty Chart # 3544 1904-06 - give the young swabbies something to do, over and over again!
Does anyone have access to Volumes 1, 2 and 3 of this journal, which would cover the early/mid 1930's? Part of Vol 3, all of Vol 4 and part of Vol 5 are in the HKU Library online, but I'm interested in the earlier volumes. Thanks.
Hi there,
I read that there was once a cargo/passenger boat service between Hong Kong and Singapore and I'd like to know if you could tell me more about it, especially for the year 1980.
Could you for instance tell me or direct me to a site where I could find the timetables of such a service, the name(s) of the ship(s), the cost, the duration and so on?
Once again, I'd be very glad to hear from you,
Lovely Easter to you all,
Michael
Semi annual lunch at the American Club in Central. I can bring 3 guests and David has already accepted. 9 Apr, Friday.
Any takers ?

Those of us who metal detect will of course be familiar with the blank rounds which litter the countryside from British army training in the 80s. However, recently I have found fired bullets (not casings) around various spots in Hong Kong, near or on major hiking routes like the MacLehose trail, sometimes smack dab in the center of the path where hundreds of thousands of hikers have likely trodden.
My question is, did the British military use live ammunition in training drills around the hills of Hong Kong, or were live ammo drills confined to the firing range? If live ammo was used, how did the military ensure public safety? Were there any designated "training zones" (similar to the one at Castle Peak used by the PLA today) for live fire drills which no longer exist and are now open to the public? I'd imagine these training zones probably wouldn't include popular paths such as the MacLehose trail.
Ps. Do we have any veterans who have served in HK on this website?
You can click on the bold column headings, eg Name, to sort the table by the values in that column. (This can make it easier to find a name, as the names in the printed document weren't always listed in alphabetical order.)

I am trying to locate Carolyn Blake, who was in Stanley Internment Camp with her mother, Mollie and father CC (Cyril).
Carolyn and her family shared miserable conditions in one small room with my mother Norah Potter and myself . I was born in September 1941.
The Blakes were very kind to us. My mother kept a diary in the camp and I have just published a book based on these and other writings.
If Carolyn is still around she may be interested.
I am interested in the pre-WWII history and details of the Police Station at Sai Kung, in particular the European police contingent (including Marine Police) stationed there.
For example Acting Sergeant J Riddell A120 was stationed at Sai Kung in mid-1935.
Does anyone have information for this interesting subject?
An interesting discussion was hosted an hour or so ago by OxHKForum - between Dr Vivian Kong of Bristol, Haidee Or and Prof John D Wong HKU on this topic - a lot on the interaction between history online via social media, blogs and other site and academia. Gwulo recieved a very honourable mention, naturally! I think its still possible to register and log on to catch the talk over this weekend. https://www.oxhkforum.com/history.html
Gwulo readers may be interested in a new exhibition from The Photographic Heritage Foundation: 'Photographs from the 1950s: Marjorie Doggett's Singapore, Lee Fook Chee's Hong Kong'.
Marjorie Doggett and Lee Fook Chee created vivid records of Singapore and Hong Kong more than six decades ago. Both were highly capable. In 1947, as young adults, they left their homelands to live out their lives in the cities they reached, Singapore and Hong Kong. Yet their origins and futures were vastly different. Through photography, Marjorie found purpose in her pioneering architectural work. Exploiting his skills, Fook Chee made a living selling his photos to tourists.
The 1950s were to be a crucible decade for both cities. Singapore was moving steadily towards a locally inspired and led future. Hong Kong was to witness an economic transformation. In both, the urban setting soon would be massively changed and developed. The exhibition shows the cities "as they were" - before their massive modernisation.
The exhibition is curated by Edward Stokes and generously hosted by the Sino Group on the 3rd Floor of Sino Plaza, 255 Gloucester Road, Causeway Bay. It is open daily from 10am to 5pm until 30 May.

Previous Cash's Bungalow site revisited and explored at a quick glance.
The small path/drive towards to bungalow site was still there and overgrown a bit. I am not sure asmall 'Smart car' nowadays can go through this small drive. There is a collapsed brick structure with small pabble stones with concrete over the top. It looks a pillar or a standing structure. I noticed from the Geoinfo map, there is a square feature on the site and this is likely the corresponding onsite structure.
There is another brick built structure that remains in good shape on the southeast side of the site. In the middle of the site, a dip was noticed on the ground with lots of nearby overgrowth. A torch is needed if for a closer look of the dip. Not sure what's inside or underneath.
Amazing expedition in 30mins!
